Seriously, America?

Reading time: 3 minutes

In the morning of the 9th of November, this was the reaction of many people across the world to the outcome of the US presidential election. It seemed that most of us who followed the election process over the last year, had been considerably outraged about Trump’s many controversial statements, but not 100% convinced that he could be real competition in the run for the office of President. With no previous political experience, a questionable record and such polarizing opinions against almost any minority, it did not seem very likely that Trump would get sufficient voters, right?
Turns out we were wrong. America has made its choice, and as of Wednesday morning CET, Donald Trump has been elected the 45th President of the United States of America.

What does the future hold?

As many presidential candidates before him, Trump has made promises during his campaign about how he is going to reform the American economy, political policies and how he will ‘make America great again’. During his campaign, many experts criticised his statements and predicted dark times for the American politics if Trump would actually comply with these claims.

In fact a number of his proposed strategies are highly contradictory if not unrealistic. According to economists, the cuts in tax policies he promised for example would threaten the fiscal stability in the US-market, which is still not fully recovered from the financial crisis 2007.
Another very important factor is the uncertainty the American economy is facing right now: The outcome of the election is not supported by a large number of voters, the nation is divided and many are frightened by the changes they anticipate.

Trumps next steps are difficult to predict in any area – due to his many contradicting statements and changes of heart, it is really difficult to make forecasts about future developments.

What does that mean for organizations who are in business with the United States?

A difficult question. If Trump is able to go through with all his plans both for the American policies as well as the international relations; ‘building a wall’ on the border with Mexico and strengthening the national economy by restricting international trade – this will also effect international organizations doing business in the United States.
While it is too soon to say what the future may bring, it will surely be different from the last terms of office. Trump will be inaugurated in January 2017, but not even he knows what the future holds: He may be one of the most powerful men in the world, but he is by far not the only one making decisions in American politics – the senate and the house of representatives are still powerful instances. Leads International is trying to adapt all international strategies to the current developments. Until then, all we can do is stay tuned and keep up to date with American politics: It will definitely be interesting!
